Crossover

Setup:
1. Irina opens a portal to the DC universe.
2. Lyta makes Damien aware of Irina’s presence.
3. Damien captures Irina and sets about inventing a device to duplicate her powers.
4. Damien starts sending people into the other dimension for recon.
5. Damien himself will go into the other dimension for recon.
6. Seeks out the MNG’s villains and makes them an offer. Offers to set them up in the DCNG universe as the “Thunderbolts” and as heroes.
7. MNG villains accept the offer and go into the DCNG universe and start building a rep as heroes.
8. Damien brings Doomsday, The General and other biggies over into MNG U and sends them to the US while he takes over Latveria
9. Damien powers Doom's time machine with a mother box to put up a phase shield, so anyone attacking, or even scrying or trying reality manipulation ala Franklin would end up in other places/times.

Phase I
1. Avengers, Defenders, F4, Alpha Flight, Champions, X-men are all occupied by dealing with hit and run attacks by IJS and big bads
2. DCNG good guys come into MNGU.
3. The Avengers think they’re more bad guys and attack. Fight between Avengers and DCNG good guys until they realize they’re both on the same side.
4. JLA and Titans give the Avengers/Defenders/X-Men/Alpha Flight/Champions the rundown on the villains that have shown up and about the “Thunderbolts”
5. Teams are formed to deal with the threats in each universe.
6. Athena shows up and informs the Defenders that the DCU gods have a much stricter non-interference pact, relying strictly on their champions...
7. Asleif ages Zoey up and Asleif, Aridis and Svalin grant her their powers and make her their champion.
8. Argo, Ohu, and (Halbjorn?) age Scotty and make him their champion.
9. One team leaves for DCNGU and the other is left behind to find out about Latveria.
10. Damien’s Atlantean and Lyta help the Atlantean sorcerers “discover” the magical way between dimensions and convince Ataam to send an invasion force.
11. Damien has another Atlantean go to Atlantis on the MU side and do the same thing. Namor and Arthur start fighting because they think the other is invading.

Phase II
MU
1. Small team is sent to Latveria to investigate and are sent to different time periods.
a. Individual adventures in the different time periods.
2. Exiles arrive and are tasked to retrieve the missing heroes while remaining heroes need to deal with the chaos.
a. First they need to get inside of Latveria and disable the shielding.
b. Once inside, they need to hold off the IJS baddies long enough to find the time machine.
c. Find out where the missing heroes were sent.
d. Use the time machine to go and retrieve all the missing heroes.
e. Return the missing heroes back to the present and reunite with the other heroes.
f. Exiles disable the machine.
3. Underwater team needs to get Namor to stop fighting Arthur.
4. Exiles, heroes and Atlanteans unite to take on the DC Baddies and free Latveria
5. Street types deal with Jokerz and other various street level threats (monster society?) while the big battles are going on.

DC
1. Thunderbolts and other baddies arrive.
2. Thunderbolts pose as heroes and build a good rep.
3. Other baddies are out causing chaos and are “stopped” by the Thunderbolts.
4. Thunderbolts capture baddies and toss them in jail, only to have other baddies break them back out.
5. Cycle starts again.
6. Remaining DCers and the MU team need to deal with ensuing chaos.
7. Underwater team needs to get Arthur to stop fighting Namor.
8. Heroes go after the Thunderbolts and allies, who stop them and then turn around and start suing them. Press charges on them for trespass onto private property and assault.
9. Let loose the Collector out in DCU space... "Wait, the /last/ Kryptonians/Martians? I must have one."
10. Have some MU villains who aren't stopped by the TBolts, who will probably set up a home city, both so we have some Marvel flavor while the DC kids are gone, and the TBolts can point to how nice things are in their area while everyone else appears to be slacking.
11. Street types would deal with the street types Marauders, Frightful Four and others.
12. Heroes and Atlanteans unite to take down the Thunderbolts and allies.

Phase III
The End
1. Adam Warlock reporting that the Infinity Gems were stolen by Darkseid kid's Horsemen, and with Thanos' guidance, they're using the time, space, and knowledge gems to discern the anti-life equation.
2. All the street types needing to rescue Doom and Luthor from wherever Damien stuck them so they can repair the time machine that got busted up in the final raid on Latveria and use it to fix the damage done to the timestream so the portal can safely be sealed.
3. All non-magical heroes go after Thanos and Darkseid.
4. Convention of sorcerers is held in England, with Quinn officiating, as he'd be uber in DC's England, to seal the gap and throw things back to their own universes.

Various notes/ideas:
Starro the Conqueror, giant, nearly indestructible cosmic starfish that sends starro-spawn that subvert the wills of anyone they attach to to service of Starro, have even taken over GL's. Eternals (Kal, Iason, and two others (Possibly Sersi and Ikaris) form Uni-mind to take care of Starro.

Have Fate and Strange and maybe some of the other mystics pull their first team ups in a test run for later trapping Halbjorn and Doomsday together in some kind of mystic prison.

Have Misha and some other semi-powered fighty-types sent to the Hyborean age and team briefly with Conan and Red Sonja

An agent of Pluto's, probably some kind of traditionalist necromancer gets hold of one of the Darkhold pages being distributed right now...

Mephisto sends out an agent of his own to possess a mortal.

Said mortal overcomes the demon's will and becomes Ghost Rider. Annoyed at this, the new GR is banished into another dimension.

Pluto's agent uses the Darkhold page to create evil duplicates of a number of people, working towards entrapping more souls and general domination, grand schemer that he is.

Meanwhile, in Russia, a young mutant, child of Darkstar, who sounds like she'll be a Magik-style portal opener/dimensional type, so related, but not the same as mom....

Opens a portal, and is surprised to find a flaming skulled guy ride out of it on a motorcycle.

They manage to do some digging, find out about the plan, but the only people they can be absolutely certain aren't evil dupes are those who have, or children of people who have gone to Pluto's realm and escaped.

Unable to gather the original Champions, they sneak into the Christmas parties using DS-kid's powers, and distribute notes to Eliza, Corey, Lyta and Argo asking them to meet them elsewhere.

So the six of them, kids of the original Champions, need to track down Pluto's agent, defeat the duplicates of other heroes guarding him, and destroy the Darkhold page.

Gabriel's skills are undiscovered.
Powers:
Angelic wings with a sixteen foot span from wingtip to wingtip, which allow flight and flight capabilities equal to that of his father. The genetic make-up of his body is also altered for aerial adaptation, enhanced durability, and enhanced stamina. His body even regenerates from injury faster than normal humans, although it may take hours to days to months depending on the severity of the injury. His mother's genetics give Gabriel greatly enhanced senses (sight, smell, touch, etc).

History:
Gabriel was conceived by Callisto when she and the Morlocks kidnapped Angel. During that time, she brainwashed him into a sexual relationship (and after recovering from being brainwashed, Angel’s memory of the incident was forgotten). Callisto gave birth to Gabriel on Muir Island, off the coast of Scotland, after the Morlocks were hunted down by Mister Sinister. Callisto sent Gabriel off to live with an associate of Moira MacTaggert, and he was raised by a woman named Francesca in Scotland.

Gabriel was always aware of his mother, and in later years he left home and flew across the sea to seek her out. He made these escapades often throughout his early life, but never once tracked her down. After he turned eighteen, Gabriel gave up on finding his mother and settled down again. After he turned nineteen Gabriel met a human girl by the name of Alyssa Morton, with whom he fell madly in love. The two became a couple, and eventually married after dating for three years. Alyssa bore Gabriel a son, named Connor, and then was tragically killed in a proclaimed accident. Gabriel entered a state of depression, and turned over custody of Conner to Francesca before leaving for the United States to search for his mother again.

History: Charlie is the son of Steven Rogers (Captain America) and Sharon Carter (Agent 13). Though his parents shared joint-custody of Charlie growing up, Charlie spent the majority of his time with his father, following his adventures with the Avengers. His childhood was far from normal. He grew up with the children of other superheroes. He attended a private school for children of S.H.I.E.L.D agents. Although, for Charlie, he thought that this was perfectly normal. When he was eight, Charlie was test for any superhuman abilities through various tests run by his mother's colleagues at S.H.I.E.L.D. It was then discovered that Charlie inherited something very similar to his father's abilities when he was induced with the Super Solider Serum. Sharon then began to train her son in the hand-to-hand combat and weapons training. Steven, who had been told about his son's abilities, began training him to hone them, and also in the martial arts, acrobatics, and shield fighting.

When he was sixteen, Charlie joined the Young Avengers, under the codename Lt. America, with a costume similar to his father's. Charlie had also fashioned a shield of his own, the dimensions and design of it being extremely close to Captain America's. He's since discovered that he has a knack for leadership, though he tends to let his duties as an Avenger get in the way of his studies at New York University and, much to his mother's dismay, has no intention of joining S.H.I.E.L.D in the future. Charlie currently divides his time between school, the Avengers, and driving his dimensionally challenged half-brother, James, up the wall.

What is Loaded Questions?

Loaded Questions is a board game that asks many different type of questions. There is an adult version as well. The adult version tests general Sex IQ and asks funny more personal questions. The adult game was played a few times in Seattle when Stacy visited Gavin, Michelle and Jeff and they all played in character. It was a blast and after having done this, Gavin decided to take it upon himself to post a question from the game each week in the OOC comm to give the players a very short writing exercise.

Answering the questions is completely voluntary. Players can answer with one, two, or all of their characters. There is even a loaded_question utility account if a player wants to have their character(s) answer anonymously. This is a little tool to help players get into the heads of their characters.

Every Saturday a new question is posted.

Powers: Lyta's wings, not only do they grant her the ability to fly, but her bone structure is hollowed, like that of a bird's. Lyta possesses telepathic abilities, which gives her the ability to read minds and project her thoughts into the minds of others, among other abilities that she herself has yet to tap into. Lyta also possesses peak human strength, being able to lift up to about five-hundred pounds, superhuman stamina, durability, and a regenerative healing factor

History: Lyta is the only child of Warren Worthington and Betsy Braddock, the X-Men known as Angel and Psylock. Lyta was the result of a brief reunion that her parents had when they were both the X-Men. When Betsy first found out that she was pregnant, Warren wanted to marry her. Betsy, turned down his offer, as the couple had split at the time. However, as Warren wanted to be involved in his daughter's life, the two shared jointed custody of their daughter, and Lyta was shuttled back and forth between the two, though she spent a large portion of her time with her mother. It was her father that taught her how to fly, and her mother that trained in both her telepathic abilities and the marital arts. When she turned fourteen, Xavier offered Lyta an invitation to attend Xavier's School for the Gifted. Lyta accepted, wanting to hone her abilities, but also wanting to get a chance to have a closer look at the career path that her parents chose. She bonded with the children of other X-Men, as well as new students around her age. When she turned eighteen, Lyta left the mansion to pursue a degree in business management. Recently, having successfully earned her degree, she is coming back to the mansion to do what she loves the most, fighting for the greater good side by side with the X-Men.

Personality: Lyta tries to be the friendly, older-sister figure to her teammates, she really does. However, she will sometimes come off as aloof and standoffish. She's trying to fix this.

Miscellaneous: Lyta was born with a pair of wings growing out of her back. When not in the Mansion, Lyta wears a restraining brace to keep her wings hidden. She will wear it around the Mansion sometimes too, to avoid hitting people with them. She hates wearing it, though

Summary: The Avengers and X-ers discover a strange energy signal coming from a small area in the Antarctic(or Amazon). The team goes to investigate it and finds a dome (or just a village). Inside they find a small society and the inhabitants are the team’s descendants.

400 years ago: A jet carrying the Avengers and X-ers crashed in the Antarctic (Or Amazon). They were found and rescued by the Eternals. After discovering that they were 400 years in the past, the two teams decided to stay in the Antarctic (Or Amazon) and stay out of history’s way until a way back to their present could be found. (If in the Antarctic -The Eternals housed them in Olympia until a domed structure could be built for them. The dome was created to simulate a tropical climate and could be turned invisible to the outside world. The two teams settled there and built a society.)

1. Avengers get a call from the X-ers to pick them up in the Savage Land (or Amazon).
2. The Avengers go and pick up the X-ers and on the way back they read a strange energy signature near the south pole (or deeper in the Amazon).
3. The teams goes to investigate. They get near the source but do not see anything, but can still detect the energy signature.
4. A domed (or village) structure turns visible and an opening in the dome appears to allow the jet in.
5. The teams enter and land the jet to find a tropical environment with a small village.
6. The teams meet the inhabitants and learn that the inhabitants are their descendants.
7. The descendants explain that after the two teams left, there was an explosion aboard the jet and it ripped a hole in the time-space continuum sending the team 400 years in the past.
8. They learn about two team members that died in the explosion and the fate of the rest.
9. Anya, Emily and Toni discover the reason why the explosion happened on the departure. They can fix it and they go home or let things happen as they did.
10. Presents the issue to the team for discussion.
11. Teams decide what to do.
12. Teams take off and either the explosion happens or it doesn't happen and they go on about their lives.

Note: This plot isn't an action plot. This plot is more of a character growth/ethical question plot. This plot is designed to spark conversation about the question of determining the fate of group of people based on your actions.

This plot was created based on an episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9. While it isn't exactly the same as the ep, it should get the spirit and heart of the episode.

Pre-Plot - Build up Alpha Flight's reputation to a very good status.

1. A team of criminals (need to create) purchase masks of Alpha Flight members from Madame Masque II.
2. The team starts to commit crimes posing as Alpha Flight.
3. Crimes escalate.
4. Alpha Flight gets blamed for crimes and are taken into custody.
5. Alpha Flight escapes and goes on the lam.
6. Alpha Flight starts to hunt down the people who are the ones committing the crimes.
7. Fight with Alpha Flight vs. "Alpha Flight"
8. Alpha Flight takes impostors into custody.

X-Men

The X-Men were a group of mutants founded by Professor Charles Xavier. Mutants, or Homo Superiors, were born with superhuman abilities due to a sudden leap in evolution which generally manifested themselves at puberty. Mutants were often hated and feared because they were unlike humans. As a response Xavier created his School For Gifted Youngsters to provide a safe environment where mutants could learn to control their powers. The X-men fought for a future where humans and mutants could live together in peace.

Xavier's first class of students consisted of the bouncing Beast, the high flying Angel, telepath and telekinetic Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), the young Iceman, and team leader Cyclops. After training extensively in the school's Danger Room, the students were sent on field missions to protect the world from dangerous mutants who would use their powers against humanity. The first such mission brought them to Cape Citadel, Florida in direct confrontation with the master of magnetism, Magneto, who would go on to become their most frequent enemy along with his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants disbanded after Magneto's capture by the cosmic entity called the Stranger. The X-Men went on to face new menaces, such as the unstoppable Juggernaut and the robotic Sentinels before Magneto returned again. Their next major opponent was the mysterious organization known as Factor Three. Following the defeat of Factor Three, the X-Men faced their greatest tragedy when Professor X apparently died at the hands of Grotesk. Shortly thereafter, Magneto and his Brotherhood captured the X-Men, and only with the help of the Avengers were they able to defeat him.

After returning home, the FBI's Agent Fred Duncan ordered the team to break up, to better combat crime, which they did for the next few adventures. They were brought back together again by a robot duplicate of Magneto and Mesmero's capture of Lorna Dane, and remained together after defeating them. Shortly thereafter they attended Scott's brother Alex's graduation, only to get involved in a strange caper involving the Living Pharaoh. Alex was apparently lost in the Sahara following this, but the X-Men had little time to search for him before they were attacked by a new incarnation of the Sentinels. Defeating the Sentinels, resulting in the death of Larry Trask, the X-Men searched for a way to help Havok control his awakening mutant powers, only to discover Sauron. This battle led them back to the Savage Land, where they again battled Magneto and his Savage Land Mutates.

The X-Men subsequently managed to stop Sunfire in a battle which caused him to see the error of his ways. It was then discovered that Professor X was not dead at all, but had been preparing for the invasion of the Z'Nox and needed the time without distractions that his death bought him. The X-Men repulsed this threat, and then tracked down the Hulk in order to get a device designed by Bruce Banner to aid their comatose mentor.

Later, the Beast left the team and eventually joined the Avengers.

When the first group of students were captured by the living island of Krakoa, Xavier recruited an all new, all different group. The German demon-looking teleporter Nightcrawler, Russian strongman Colossus, Irish sonic screaming Banshee, African "Goddess" of weather Storm, Japanese hothead Sunfire, Canadian berserker Wolverine and Native American Thunderbird rescued the original team. The new multi-cultural squad set the tone for future generations of X-Men. Soon after, all of the original X-Men left except for Cyclops. Sunfire abruptly quit. Thunderbird was killed during the new teams second mission against Count Nefaria.

Upon reentry to Earth after a mission in space against Stephen Lang's Sentinels, Jean Grey pushed herself to the limit holding their spacecraft together and shielding her team members from intense radiation. Believed dead upon their crash landing in New York's Jamaica Bay, Jean suddenly arose from the ocean calling herself Phoenix and wielding more power than ever before. Unknown at the time, Jean had been replaced by the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force, while Jean was placed in a cocoon at the bottom of the bay while her body healed from radiation poisoning. Soon after, the X-Men returned to space to aid Lilandra Neramani of the Shi'ar stop her mad brother D'Ken from using the power of the M'Kraan Crystal to take over the universe. With the crystal about to shatter and destroy reality itself, Phoenix used her awesome power to fuse it back together. The X-Men returned to Earth, and Lilandra briefly returned with them.

After a fight with Mesmero and a fierce battle with Magneto inside an Antarctic volcano, most of the X-Men found themselves in the Savage Land and separated from Phoenix and the Avenger Beast, with each group presuming the other dead. Phoenix and Beast returned to the school to give Xavier the bad news. Having nothing to keep him on earth, Xavier chose to accompany Lilandra back to Shi'ar space.
The X-Men slowly made their way home after their adventures in the Savage Land and in Japan Banshee injured his vocal chords during a battle with Moses Magnum, leaving him powerless. The X-Men were ambushed by Alpha Flight on the way back to the states, who took Wolverine into custody (although he quickly escaped). When they finally returned home, they found Professor X gone and the mansion's telephone disconnected.

The X-Men and Phoenix were reunited at Muir Island when they battled Proteus, the reality altering mutant son of Moira MacTaggert. Despite his injuries, Banshee still accompanied the X-Men for the mission. However. realizing he wanted to stay by Moira MacTaggart's side, Banshee left the X-Men to be with her.

Professor X returned to earth in time to recruit Kitty Pryde for the school and defeat Emma Frost. The battle with Frost plus the ambush at the Dazzler's concert alerted the X-Men to the existence of the Hellfire Club.

While Phoenix believed the X-Men to be dead, she caught the attention of Jason Wyngarde, also known as the former Brotherhood of the Evil Mutant member Mastermind, who created a rich "Lady Grey" fantasy world in her mind with his illusions using a device created by Emma Frost. Eventually believing herself to actually be Lady Grey and also consort to Wyngarde, she was easily convinced to become the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club during the X-Men's battle against them. Phoenix broke free from Wyngarde's control when she saw a psychic version of Cyclops being murdered. Unleashing her dark side, Phoenix became Dark Phoenix, used her powers to drive Mastermind insane, destroyed the Blackbird, and abruptly departed from Earth. Seeking to enjoy the same sense of power she had felt inside the M'Kraan Crystal, Phoenix traveled to a distant star and absorbed it's energy. The sun went nova, destroying a nearby planet inhabited by five billion aliens.

Upon her return to Earth, Beast designed a neutralizer to subdue the all powerful entity. Xavier placed mental blocks in her mind to reduce Dark Phoenix's powers and allow Jean to regain control. Aware of the massacre in their Empire, The Shi'ar arrived on Earth demanding the death of Dark Phoenix. Xavier invoked Arin'n Haelar, an irrefutable Shi'ar duel of honor. Knowing her team would win, Lilandra agreed to allow the Imperial Guard to battle the X-Men. Putting up a valiant fight, the mutants fell one-by-one during a long battle on the Blue Area of the Moon. With only Cyclops and Phoenix left standing, Summers was hit by a stray energy bolt. Set into a panic, the mental blocks Xavier placed in Phoenix's mind were destroyed and she was able to utilize her full power. Lilandra ordered Plan Omega, the complete destruction of the Sol system, upon Phoenix's return.

To avert the loss of the entire star system, Xavier ordered the X-Men to defeat Phoenix. Jean regained control once more, only to activate a Kree weapon and committed suicide to avert another disaster. Cyclops deduced it was her plan all along.
After Jean Grey's funeral, Kitty Pryde came to live at the school as the newest X-Man. Cyclops left the team to figure out where his life was going. Storm became leader in his absence. She underwent a trial-by-fire in a desperate battle against Mystique's new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to save the life of Senator Robert Kelly.
Other notable foes from this period included Doctor Doom, who attempted to romance Storm, and a memorable encounter with Magneto in the Bermuda Triangle. As Kitty destroyed the central computer of his superweapon, Magneto lashed out and almost killed her. Horrified at his actions, Magneto ceased fighting and contemplated how he had become no better than the humans who had massacred his family.This battle re-united Cyclops with the team.

Corsair of the Starjammers returned to Earth seeking the X-Men's aid in stopping a rebellion against Majestrix Lilandra.The Starjammers were framed for kidnapping Lilandra while it was really Deathbird, the Majestrix's sister, in league with the alien Brood. The X-Men discovered the truth, stopped the rebellion against the Shi'ar empire, and reunited Xavier with Lilandra. Cyclops discovered that Corsair was actually his father, abducted by the Shi'ar decades earlier.

Shortly thereafter a television interview with Senator Robert Kelly worried the X-Men, who had FBI connections in their early years, and thus had government files on many of them. Carol Danvers, Wolverine, and Storm infiltrated the Pentagon and uploaded an open-ended virus that erased all references to the X-Men or members of the team. While in the Pentagon, they also encountered Mystique and Rogue of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

The Brood resurfaced abducting the X-Men, Lilandra, and Carol Danvers. Traveling across the galaxy to their home planet, a Brood Queen implanted embryos within them. Interested by Danvers unique genetic code, she was experimented upon and became Binary. Although the X-Men escaped from "Sleazeworld" all seemed lost, as once the embryos matured their hosts would undergo a metamorphosis and become a warrior Brood. Storm was saved by a young Acanti, a large space-faring creature that resembled a whale and communicated telepathically. The Acanti had been enslaved by the Brood and used as starships. With nothing left to lose the X-Men vowed to save the Acanti race. After freeing the Acanti "prophet-singer" soul from the Brood homeworld, the X-Men were healed. Before killing the Brood Queen, Kitty Pryde found the friendly dragon Lockheed who followed her back to Earth.

During the prolonged period when they were abducted by the Brood, Xavier believed that the X-Men had been killed. Moira MacTaggert convinced him to form a new team of adolescent mutants that needed his help in controlling their powers. Unwilling to see more of his students perish, Xavier was only willing to train them in the use of their special abilities rather than sending them out into combat as he had with the X-Men. These New Mutants ended up in many battles regardless, and occasionally aided the X-Men.

The X-Men learned there was one Brood embryo that had not been eliminated, one planted in Professor Xavier during their first contact with the evil aliens. Racing home they found Xavier had already been transformed into one of the Brood while battling the startled New Mutants. Defeated and taken onboard the Starjammer, Xavier's mind was placed in a cloned body.

Upon returning from space, Cyclops left the X-Men for a prolonged period of time. He had met Madelyne Pryor during a trip to meet his grandparents in Anchorage and fallen in love. It was unknown at the time that Madelyne was a clone of Jean Grey, though the resemblance was obvious. The two married, and had a child; Nathan.

Angel briefly rejoined the team, only to be captured by the Morlocks, and taken down into their tunnels to be Callisto's groom. Storm challenged Callisto to combat, without powers and to the death, which she won, securing her leadership of the Morlocks and Angel's freedom.
Two more members soon joined the team. Rogue's Brotherhood of Mutants teammates couldn't help as the Carol Danvers persona she had previously absorbed began to overwhelm her own personality. Xavier agreed to aid the desperate mutant and added her to the roster. Carol Danvers was furious that her friends would allow the girl that destroyed her life to join the team, and left Earth with the Starjammers. Most of Rogue's teammates still held animosity towards her for what she had done as a member of the Brotherhood, but she slowly gained their trust by continually showing her bravery; she nearly died protecting Wolverine and infiltrated the SHIELD helicarrier to rescue Michael Rossi. Later, Jean Grey's daughter from an alternate timeline, Rachel Summers, traveled back in time and joined the team.

Growing from his crisis of conscience, Magneto became an X-Men ally. Captured by Freedom Force while attending a Holocaust memorial gathering, he was put on trial in Paris. Mostly exonerated of charges on account of his second infancy, the trial was unfortunately interrupted by the Fenris twins, who sent Magneto and Professor X for a ride in the Parisian sewers. Half-drowned and near-death from other medical conditions, Xavier convinced his old friend to take his place as headmaster of the institute. Lilandra took him from Earth to recuperate from his injuries. Using the alias of Michael Xavier, Charles Xavier's alleged cousin, Magneto was Headmaster for a long tenure. Magneto was later invited to join the inner circle of the Hellfire Club, an offer which he and Storm decided was worth accepting.

Cyclops returned, but his attempts to regain leadership of the X-Men was opposed by an experienced Storm, now also an accomplished leader even without her powers. Storm defeated Cyclops through martial skill alone - forcing him to surrender by removing his visor. Cyclops left the team. Shortly afterwards, Angel contacted the original X-Men, including a recently discovered living Jean Grey, with the intent of getting them back together again. At the behest of his friend Cameron Hodge, Angel proposed that X-Factor become a mutant-hunting contractor as a cover for their activities. Rachel went dancing up the spiral paths into the Mojoverse shortly thereafter.

The Marauders (secretly commanded by Mister Sinister) made a substantial impact on the X-Men with their callous murder of most of the Morlocks living in the Alley. In their first battle with the X-Men, the Marauders took a gruesome toll, paralyzing Colossus, putting Nightcrawler in a coma, and trapping Shadowcat with her own power such that she was slowly discorporating. Magneto succeeded in healing Colossus, who rejoined the team, but Shadowcat and Nightcrawler were beyond the X-Men's help. Cyclops' brother and reservist Havok, Mojoverse freedom-fighter Longshot, the singer Dazzler, and telepath Psylocke took the injured mutants place. After recovering, Shadowcat and Nightcrawler went on to form Excalibur.

While in Texas searching for Forge, the X-Men battled the Adversary and appeared to die saving Earth on live television. The X-Men did indeed perish but Roma resurrected them , which resulted in them becoming undetectable to electronics. While improving public opinion on the heroism of mutants, their friends and family, including the New Mutants and X-Factor, believed them to be dead. The X-Men maintained this as a cover story to protect their family and friends from the retribution of super-villains, and relocated to the Australian Outback after defeating the Reavers, whose base they claimed. They would also take in Madelyne Pryor to protect her; she was abandoned by Cyclops, and being hunted by the Marauders. The X-Men made enemies of the Genoshan government after rescuing Jennifer Ransom in a covert ops mission on the island.

Soon, the X-Men were lured back to New York during the Inferno crisis. Madelyne Pryor was discovered to be a clone created by Mr. Sinister that a part of the Phoenix Force entered after committing suicide on the Moon. Pryor struck a deal with the demon N'Astirh to become the Goblin Queen out of anger at Cyclops. N'Astirh's intentions to sacrifice Nathan to allow demons to freely travel to Earth became apparent as his spells slowly converted New York City into a hellish nightmare. X-Men and X-Factor, after being pitted against one another, defeated the demon. Pryor was suicidal after learning of her origin, and killed herself in an attempt to bring Jean Grey with her. Jean survived, and absorbed the remaining Phoenix essence within Madelyne. This was the first time the X-Men were able to confirm that Jean Grey was alive.

Besides resurrecting the X-Men, Roma gave them a mysterious jewel called the Siege Perilous. The magical gem could enlarge to a giant portal. All who entered would be judged by higher powers, their good acts and ill deeds weighed, and be reborn in a new life without remembering their past lives. The X-Men found no use for the jewel during the Inferno, against the alien Brood, or when returning to the Savage Land. Curious, Dazzler used her powers to take a look inside the illuminated gem. She saw various alternate versions of herself before they were all murdered and merged into a single being that warned Dazzler everyone dies sometime.

Later the same day, a merged Nimrod/Mastermold attacked the X-Men. With only herself and Rogue left standing, Dazzler threw the Siege Perilous behind the Sentinel hoping her enemy would be sucked into the portal. While the portal appeared, the Nimrod/Mastermold anchored itself to the ground and grabbed Rogue as she tried to push it through. With no other choice, Dazzler blasted both of them into the gateway.

With Rogue presumed dead, and other members leaving the team, the X-Men were down to only Havok, Dazzler, Colossus and Psylocke. Back in the Savage Land to rescue Polaris, Psylocke had a precognitive vision of the X-Men dying back in the Australian Outback and a bound Gateway pointing to the Siege Perilous. Worried about her vision, Betsy wasn't able to warn the others before Gateway teleported them back to the Outback.

Immediately sensing the Reavers approaching when they returned to Australia, Psylocke suggested using the Siege Perilous to escape as the X-Men were in no condition to face the deadly cyborgs. After a brief discussion, and telepathic convincing of Havok, all four mutants entered the gateway. As the portal collapsed back into a gem, Donald Pierce arrived and smashed the jewel to pieces.

Meanwhile, Polaris boarded a freighter to travel back home. Her magnetic powers stolen by Zaladane and replaced with awkward size changing and invulnerability, Lorna couldn't simply fly back to her friends. Strangely, she noticed the sailors began to act weird and that her body had become a nexus for negative emotional energy. As chaos erupted on board, Lorna contacted Muir Island for help bringing Banshee to rescue her. Lorna informed all the Muir Island residents that the X-Men were indeed alive, but a sudden siege occurred before anything could be done. A haphazardly created interim group of X-Men was formed to protect allies of the mutants living on Muir Island from an attack by Pierce's Reavers. Lorna joined mutants Forge, Banshee, Multiple Man, Siryn, the Morlock Sunder, X-Allies Sharon Friedlander, Tom Corsi, Alysande Stuart, Amanda Sefton, Legion and Moira MacTaggart to defend the research center. Val Cooper dispatched Freedom Force to assist. Though the attack was repelled, Sunder and Stonewall were killed by the cyborgs while Destiny was murdered by a Shadow King possessed Legion. The remaining "Muir Island X-Men" stayed, under the influence of the psychic entity.

Weeks after entering the gateway, Rogue returned to the empty Australian base with her memory intact. At first believing the cosmic judging was a joke, she realized the memories she contained belonging to Carol Danvers were gone. She was then attacked by Ms. Marvel, and discovered the Siege Perilous had given both personalities within Rogue a body connected to a single life force. Rogue was prepared to die, but Magneto intervened and killed Danvers. The two spent time in the Savage Land, allying themselves with Ka-Zar against Zaladane, and began to become attracted to one another. Their relationship ended before it had a chance to blossom once Magneto killed Zaladane, which Rogue opposed.

After the Reaver assault Forge and Banshee began to look for the missing X-Men, and found Colossus in New York City under the guise of Peter Nicholas. His memory of his superhero life and his special powers gone, Colossus had become a popular artist in Soho living with Genoshan emigrants. Peter even began a relationship with the Morlock Callisto, her face molded in that of a beautiful model by Masque. Realizing he was happy in his new life, his former teammates left him alone.

Psylocke was found naked and amnesiac by agents of The Hand. Her mind and soul were transfered into the Asian body of Kwannon, and she was brainwashed into becoming the Lady Mandarin. On a mission she faced Wolverine, and upon attacking him with her psychic knife the backlash of memories of the X-Men began to break her free from the Hand's control. Storm, believed killed by the Nanny, had actually been de-aged to a pre-teenager; loosing her memories of her adult life in the process. She was framed for murder by the Shadow King, and went back to being a thief. Eventually she crossed paths with Gambit and the two began a partnership, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Found by the Nanny before long, the two defeated her and though Ororo's memories were returned she remained a child. Ororo took Gambit with her to the X-Mansion and reunited with Forge and Banshee as they were on their search for the missing X-Men. Unfortunately, tests proved Storm was stuck without her powers as a prepubescent .

Dazzler was discovered on the beach by Guido, Lila Cheney's bodyguard. Alison learned of her past life through computer files, and became trapped in the Mojoverse after a teleport of Lila's went awry when trying to save Longshot from Spiral.

The partially regrouped team at the X-Mansion was soon thrown another hurdle; Magistrates from Genosha arrived to capture the mutants for crimes committed on the island. Ororo recognized one of the attackers to be Havok, but couldn't warn her teammates before she was defeated along with the New Mutant members Warlock, Wolfsbane, Rictor, and Boom-Boom. All were transported to Genosha by Pipeline and brought before their true captor: Cameron Hodge. Once an X-Factor ally, Hodge actually despised mutants and made a deal with the demon N'Astirh to become immortal, and came to take control of the nation. Warlock, already weakened, was able to help his friends escape. Hodge intended to acquire Warlocks transformation powers, but Wolfsbane returned to stop the transfer though Warlock wass already dead. Rhane was recaptured, and transformed into a mutate.

X-Factor joined the remaining New Mutants and interim X-Men, consisting only of Gambit, Forge, and Banshee, on a rescue mission to save their friends. In South Asia Wolverine, Psylocke, and Jubilee heard of their friend's fates on the news and ended up rescuing Boom Boom and Rictor. Jubilee tended to the young mutants, while Logan and Betsy infiltrated Hodge's citadel only to be discovered by Havok. The X-Men and X-Factor fared no better, with both squads becoming captives. When Havok saw his brother defeated by Hodge, Alex remembered his life before entering the Siege Perilous. Meanwhile Storm had taken Genegineer David Moreau, creator of the mutate process, hostage but was defeated by Hodge and forced to become a mutate.

A mock trial found the mutants guilty, and all were given the choice of being transformed into a mutate or death. They chose death, but Hodge first had to deal with the insurrection of the Genegineer, aware Hodge's actions were insane, and many magistrates including Wipeout. As Wipeout had canceled most of the X-Team's mutant powers, Hodge killed him hoping they would be permanently lost. Unbeknownst to Hodge, Moreau gave Storm the ability to return the mutants their gifts rather than into a mutate. A rebel magistrate brought Storm to the X-Men and as she used her powers, Ororo reverted back into an adult and regained her powers. Ororo then restored her teammates abilities, and all escaped and started hunting for Hodge. Concurrently, Moreau planted a bomb to destroy all laboratories within the citadel. Furious, Hodge killed the traitor, though the Genegineer was able to weaken him considerably. The X-Men eventually found their enemy and attacked. Cyclops and Havok unleashed a powerful assault destroying all but Hodge's head which falls near Wolfsbane, who rips it to pieces in a rage. Rictor caused tremors to finally destroy the citadel, burying the remains of Hodge's broken body. Chief Magistrate Anderson led a revolt against the Genoshan government, and the Magistrates were able to seize power. Havok and Wolfsbane choose to stay behind and make sure mutants were given fair treatment. Because of the intense media coverage of the Genoshan disaster, the world learned the X-Men were still alive. Regardless, the reunited mutants returned to Salem Center and began to rebuild the team that had been splintered for months. Upon their arrival, Warlock's ashes were spread over Doug Ramsey's grave.

Unfortunately, there was no rest for the X-Men. Soon after Xavier returned to Earth from his adventures with the Starjammers, an old enemy returned. The Shadow King had been spreading waves of hate around the globe, and used Polaris to absorb the negative emotional energy to empower himself to unthinkable levels. Professor X used Cerebro to identify the source of the chaos. He returned from his sojourn in space and sent the X-Men to Muir Island to confront their oddly acting allies. It seems Moira MacTaggart had been training the "Muir Island X-Men", and new visitors Rogue and Lila Cheney had taken up residence and participated in duels. When the mutants arrived to investigate, they were surprised and defeated by the Shadow King-controlled island residents.

Back in Westchester, Stevie Hunter was attacked by a possessed Colossus. Xavier found no way to break Shadow King's control over him other than erasing the Peter Nicholas personality completely. Charles then asked his original students, X-Factor, to rescue the current X-Team. On Muir Island, Shadow King used Legion as his human host after the current one was killed while Forge eluded possession and even freed some of his friends. The remaining heroes in good mind were divided into three teams, focusing on an astral plane attack on Farouk with a second team defending Xavier from physical attacks and a third freeing Polaris and disrupting their enemies' nexus.

Forge succeeded in using a neuro-synaptic weapon on Psylocke so she could use her "psychic-knife" on Polaris to destroy Farouk's nexus. Xavier was badly wounded during the battle, his legs broken and again confined to a wheelchair. As Shadow King disappeared, Legion fell into a coma and the devastation of Muir Island was apparent. Most importantly, all five X-Factor members returned to the X-Men along with Rogue and Colossus; after many years the X-Men had finally reunited as one team.
With the team now larger than ever before, organization suddenly became essential. To remain effective as a group, the X-Men were divided into two squads:

Blue Squad: Cyclops, Wolverine, Jubilee, Beast, Psylocke, Rogue, and Gambit
Gold Squad: Storm, Phoenix, Archangel, Iceman, Colossus, and later the newcomer Bishop
Forge, Moira, and Banshee returned to the X-Mansion and act as the team's support staff.

The Blue Squad battled Magneto and his Acolytes in Genosha. Discovering Moira MacTaggart had altered his DNA years ago when he was regressed to a toddler, Magneto questioned if his recent turn to heroics was a result of Moira's tampering or his own free will. Magneto forced Moira to brainwash the Blue Squad into joining his Acolytes on Asteroid M, a space station haven for mutants. To make matters worse, the American and Russian governments decided to use a plasma cannon on the space station to end the threat of Magneto once and for all. Worried about their friends, the Gold Squad sneaked on board and rescued their teammates, while a traitorous Fabian Cortez abandoned Asteroid M and planned to make Magneto a martyr so mutants around the world would join him. Xavier tried to talk the Acolytes into escaping the doomed base with the X-Men, but Magneto and his followers instead stayed to die.

The Gold Squad began their tenure attending a party at the Hellfire Club thrown by Emma Frost. The White Queen explained she and other members of the Club were targets of assassination, and sought the help of her former enemies. Before long, Trevor Fitzroy arrived and began to attack Frost and her Hellions. In Australia, Donald Pierce was attacked by Fitzroy's Sentinels. Gateway teleported Pierce to New York, along with three of the attacking Sentinels. The Sentinels seemingly killed Frost, Pierce, and Jean Grey. Fitzroy drained the life of every Hellion he could subdue, killing all of Frost's students.

Returning her body to the X-Mansion, Xavier realized Jean's consciousness had been relocated to Emma Frost's body. Jean woke up while in the custody of Fitzroy and Shinobi Shaw, who were revealed to be members of the Upstarts. The Upstarts competed in a contest of murder run by the Gamesmaster. Their first targets were former and current Hellfire Club members, and Fitzroy believed he had won and was entitled to run the Upstarts. Jean surprised the two by using telekinesis, a power Emma Frost lacked, and escaped with the X-Men. Fitzroy used the Hellions life essence to open a portal to the future and brought some allies. Bishop, a mutant born in the 21st century, arrived instead. Fitzroy escaped, and Bishop joined the present day X-Men. Xavier realized the White Queen's psyche also remained alive, and returned it to her own comatose body.

Battles with Omega Red (a member of the Soviet Super Soldier program) and Hazard followed.

The two teams were brought together when Professor X was shot while giving a speech during a Lila Cheney peace concert. Stryfe (disguised as Cable) shot Xavier and infected him with a technoorganic virus. Simultaneously, Cyclops and Jean Grey were abducted by the Horsemen of Apocalypse in Westchester. They were delivered to Mr. Sinister, who was disguised as Apocalypse unbeknownst to the Horsemen. Sinister handed the Summers couple over to Stryfe in exchange for a mysterious container.

The Gold Team searched for Scott and Jean while the Blue Team joined X-Factor in hunting down X-Force for information on Cable's whereabouts. Cable convinced Wolverine and Bishop it was Stryfe who shot Xavier and not himself, revealing both were from the future and had long been enemies. Apocalypse woke up from rejuvenation to find he had been impersonated, and was defeated by Stryfe. With Beast and Dr. MacTaggert unable to save Xavier, they were forced to work with Apocalypse. Apocalypse sped up the cycle of the techno-organic virus, forcing the pathogen to burn itself out before it can kill the Professor.

Wolverine received a subconscious telepathic message from Jean, hinting that she was being held captive on the Moon. The X-Men found Stryfe's Moon base and launched an attack. Scott and Jean were rescued, though Cable disappeared with Stryfe into the timestream. Meanwhile, Sinister opened his container to find nothing inside. It was soon discovered that Essex had opened a Pandora's Box with Stryfe's final revenge on the Summers clan; the mutant infecting Legacy Virus.

Following the assassination attempt, the X-Men seemingly dealt with one crisis after the next without a break. Magneto resurfaced very much alive and with a new lead Acolyte: Exodus, the self proclaimed voice of Magneto. Magneto prepared an all out war on humanity upon learning the Magneto Protocols, a plan to alter the Earth's electromagnetic field to inhibit his powers, had been activated. Devastated by his sister's death by the Legacy virus, Colossus lost faith in Xavier's dream and decided to join Magneto and try his.

The rest of the X-Men stood by their mentor and attacked Magneto on his new space base Avalon when he began sending massive E.M.P. waves around the globe. Jean and Xavier attacked him telepathically, while Wolverine defended Quicksilver to save him from his own father.

Not long after, the X-Men faced with the Phalanx. The Phalanx, a techno-organic race bent on ruling the world, took over the X-Mansion and assumed the form of various X-Men. Banshee managed to escape along with the captive Sabretooth, a recovering Emma Frost, and the youngest X-Man Jubilee. Banshee learned the Phalanx were after the next generation of mutants, hoping to experiment and eventually absorb the young mutants into their collective. Sean and Emma saved the targeted young mutants, but only with the sacrifice of the young Blink. The surviving teenage mutants became Generation X and were taught how to use their mutant powers by Banshee and Frost at the Massachusetts Academy.

Meanwhile, Senator Robert Kelly was running for President on an anti-mutant platform. Sage attempted to persuade him from causing a race war, but he remained headstrong. Mystique again attempted an assassination along with her Brotherhood, but made her actions much more obvious. The Brotherhood's attack on Kelly was prevented by a dying Pyro, who begged the Senator to stop the circle of violence. Kelly began to think twice.

Team History:
The Avengers were one of Earth's foremost organization of costumed superhuman adventurers dedicated to safeguarding the world form any threat beyond the power of conventional peacekeeping forces to handle. Founded several months after the incorporation of the hero team Fantastic Four, the Avengers became the first superhuman team to be granted official government sanctions by the National Security Council of the United States, the General Assembly of the United Nations, and later by the international intelligence/law enforcement agency SHIELD.

The five founding members of the Avengers first banded together when Loki, the Asgardian God of Mischief, attempted to discredit the monstrous Hulk in order to draw his half-brother, the thunder god Thor, into battle. Loki was trapped in Asgard due to his brother's actions but still able to manipulate Midgard (Earth). Loki tricked the Hulk into destroying a railway line. Rick Jones, the Hulk's friend, radioed the Fantastic Four for help, but Loki instead relayed the information to Thor to draw him out in the open. However, Iron Man, the Wasp, and Ant-Man also received the radio signal unbeknownst to Loki and arrived at the scene, attempting to reason with the Green Goliath. Not falling for the trick, Thor confronted Loki and exposed his scheme to the others. Defeating Loki, the group agreed they worked well together and should formalize the team. The Wasp suggested the name "Avengers" and a legend was born.

The newly formed team assembled a short time later at the midtown Manhattan mansion of industrialist Anthony Stark (in reality their fellow member Iron Man). Stark soon donated the mansion to the Avengers for their exclusive use, and set up a foundation to cover all the operation expenses of the nonprofit team under his mother's name, creating the Maria Stark Foundation. The team put down a charter and bylaws to govern their operations. The Stark family's trusted butler Edwin Jarvis was kept on as the principal regular domestic employee at what became known as the Avengers Mansion.

When the Hulk proved to be uncontrollable, a new member was discovered when battling Namor the Sub-Mariner. The legendary Captain America had been in suspended animation, frozen in ice since just before the end of World War II. Needing to adjust to the world he awoke in, Captain America joined the heroes. A born leader, the living legend was given retroactive "founding member" status in place of the Hulk, and was seen until his death as the heart and soul of the team.

The Avengers soon found themselves facing the Masters of Evil, a group of villains with grudges against certain heroes within the team. The original Masters consisted of Baron Heinrich Zemo, Black Knight, Melter, and Radioactive Man. Executioner, Enchantress and Wonder Man joined shortly thereafter, with the latter turning on Zemo after gaining the Avengers' trust. He was apparently killed by Zemo for his actions. Following several more battles with the Masters, their foes finally fell; Zemo was killed in a fatal rock slide triggered by his own weaponry as he and Captain America were fighting.

Kang the Conqueror fought the Avengers in between battles with the Masters, trying to take over the world with his advanced technology from the 30th century. Losing once, Kang used a Spider-Man robot to fool the Avengers as Zemo had used Wonder Man to gain the team's trust and then betray them. Yet, his second plan fails and Kang escaped back into the time stream.

After their battles with Kang and the Masters of Evil, the Wasp proposed that they take a leave of absence for a while, stating the stress of constant danger. Iron Man and Giant-Man (Pym's second identity after Ant-Man) agree, though Thor and Captain America weren't present and didn't voice their opinion. The team managed to find others to act as replacements:

Hawkeye: Expert marksmen and wielder of trick arrows, Clint Barton fought Iron Man but sought redemption.
Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, Pietro & Wanda Maximoff and children of Magneto. They had previously been coerced into joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants by their father, and wanted to change course.

Captain America returned after the new members had been found and acted as team leader, while Thor resigned along with the other founders. The new foursome became known as "Cap's Kooky Quartet" and were considered not as powerful and less capable as their predecessors. Due to the Maximoff twins' terrorist backgrounds and Hawkeye's clash with Iron Man, public perception was also tainted. The team proved their worth by defeating the Swordsman (Jacques_Duquesne) (a recruit of the Mandarin), Power Man (created by the Enchantress), Doctor Doom and surviving another bout with Kang.
Over the years, the team continued to operate and experienced many fluctuations in membership. Former members would often return for stints as active members (with the exception of the Hulk), and many new members would also be inducted. The Swordsman was the fifth recruit to the team, but served only a several day stint before betraying the Avengers and being expelled. Hercules, the Black Widow, the Black Knight, and others would often serve in an unofficial capacity for a brief period before being granted official membership. Others, such as the Black Panther, would serve as a replacement for another member's leave of absence, as the Panther did for Captain America.

Shortly afterward, then-current Chairman, the Vision, petitioned the US government to approve the establishment of a second team of active Avengers to be based on the West Coast. Getting official clearance, the Vision appointed Hawkeye to be the new team's chairman and sent him to Los Angeles, California to set up a base of operations. The original West Coast roster consisted of Hawkeye himself, his wife Mockingbird, his original inspiration Iron Man, Wonder Man, and Tigra. Soon, the organization grew to two independently-operated but fully-coordinated branches of Avengers.

The East Coast branch eventually found itself in a long series of misfortunes. First, when it was learned that the Vision planned to take benevolent control of the world government, certain punitive measures were taken by the United States, despite the fact that the Vision aborted his plan before it truly endangered anyone. The government limited the Avengers' access to security-related information and invoked certain sanctions, including the privilege of launching their supersonic Quinjets from their Mansion. The Avengers were forced to lease a part of Hydrobase, a floating island and scientific research station in the Atlantic Ocean, in order to use an airbase outside of FAA jurisdiction.

Later, the Avengers Mansion was nearly destroyed by a concentrated effort of the largest group of organized super-villains up to that time, the Masters of Evil as led by the new Baron Zemo, hellbent on revenge for his father's death. Although the Avengers finally managed to defeat the villains at great cost, the team relocated entirely to Hydrobase while the Mansion was being repaired. Through a steady series of misfortunes, most notably the subversion of their member Doctor Druid by Ravonna (then called Nebula), the Avengers' East Coast branch was ultimately left with no active members.

Captain America, then called the Captain, immediately reorganized the team with the hero Gilgamesh and the temporary members Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman of the Fantastic Four. Captain America soon reassembled all known members and associates to the rebuilt Avengers Mansion, claiming that all heroes may consider themselves on reserve and ready for service, although an active team of seven members (plus two reserves) would be the primary response team. Also at this time, the Avengers negotiated with the United Nations, earning global jurisdiction by pledging to serve under a U.N. charter as it had previously the United States.

The Avengers continued to protect the innocent and the world, but also found time to raise families.

The children of the Avengers are now coming into their own and taking on the mantle of responsibility and following in their parents' footsteps and becoming Avengers.

There are currently two teams of Avengers, the adults and the children. The adults use the name Avengers while the kids have taken on the mantle of the Young Avengers.

Some of you may find this familiar, but I think it's very useful. For those who find it unfamilar, this was written up by Will (and used with permission) for Marvel Mansion.

Tips & Tricks: How to Plot for Your Character

Every story needs something. Yes, things like action, romance, and drama are good, but every good story really needs a plot. This game is really no different. We're all writing stories with our characters and for our characters, and those stories need plots.

I know there are some people here who think that they aren't good at plotting, and that's ok. And even those of us who are good at plotting can always have room for improvement. Thus I bring you a few pieces of advice about thinking up and running plots.

I. TAKE THE INITIATIVE

If you're waiting for a really cool and awesome plot to fall into your character's lap, expect to be waiting for a VERY long time. Which isn't to say that your character isn't awesome, or that you're not a good player. Those things have absolutely nothing to do with it.

When people think of plots, they generally think of ideas for their characters, not yours. After all, they're not playing your character, you are. They may think of a role for your character to play in their plot, but don't expect the plot to focus around your particular character. They also may not, which, again, has nothing to do with you as a rper or a person, but their thoughts are focused elsewhere.

Its not selfish to want rp, but generally, no one is thinking of your character except for you. Therefore, it is up to YOU to get your character involved. The best way to get your character involved in a plot is to think of one, then run it.

II. FOUR HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE

Most plots tend to start as a vague idea. Some strange thought or sentence that sticks in your brain for some odd reason. Developing that idea into a plot takes a bit of work, but additional brain power, particularly from an additional brain, can speed things up.

Put your ideas out there. Doing so in the AIM chat is good, but you should especially do that here in the OOC comm. Not everyone can be on AIM, and even if they are on, they may not have the time or brain power at that moment to help focus your idea. The OOC affords everyone a chance to look at your idea, and gives them time to think before responding.

Now, it is important to understand that not every idea you have is a good one. Some ideas will gain some traction, while others won't. There really is no rhyme or reason as to why some ideas catch on and some don't, so don't be discouraged if your idea doesn't generate much excitement, and definitely don't take it personally. A good chunk of plotting comes from simply tossing ideas against a wall and seeing what sticks. If something doesn't, keep tossing.

On the flip side of that, if you do encounter an idea that rubs you the wrong way, consider your response very carefully. You're, of course, free to disagree with any idea that's presented, but don't make it your mission to tear down an idea. This isn't BRPS, and as players, we're all in this together. Do your best to keep you criticism constructive. You can point out flaws, but also try to think of possible solutions or ways around those flaws to make the idea workable. If it helps, think of it as a creative challenge: How can I turn this into a good idea?

In addition, while a plot is in motion, constant communication will do a lot to help it stay in motion. It keeps everyone on the same page, and people know where and when to ping. Again, I suggest utilizing the OOC comm, because not everyone will be on AIM at the time. Email is also a good back-up plan.

III. TIME HAS NO MEANING

Generally speaking, while the mods come up with the BIG plots for the community, that doesn't mean the smaller plots are any less important to the game, or need to be shoved aside while larger ones plod through. If you consider how each post can be like a single issue of a comic, then much like how several marvel characters can appear in three or four different titles in the same month, your character can be in several different posts around the same time.

In addition, your character can participate in several plots at the same time. So long as the plot elements aren't wildly in conflict with each other, go nuts.

There is no specific order that plots need to be run in. Several can be run at the same time. Obviously, most of us want to be polite and not step on any toes, but there generally aren't any in your way. And, yes, some of us are continuity nerds, we need to know what happened, where, and in what order, but all of that doesn't need to be settled right away. I understand that if a major change is going to happen to your character's status quo, you may wish to hold off on having them appear elsewhere until said change is played through. That's fine, but as a general tip, as long as you avoid directly referencing to the other plots going on, there should be minimal continuity conflicts.

Basically, don't be "waiting for Annihilation to finish" to do something on your own. You'll be waiting a long time.

IV. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BE THE BAD GUY

Most heroes need villains to fight, and that generally means you need a villain temped. Of course, getting people to temp baddies can sometimes be like pulling teeth. I've found a couple of things can help.

First, ask a couple of days in advance. You're highly unlikely to find someone to temp for you at the last minute. Either because no one was thinking about temping a bad guy, or people might be busy doing other things at the moment.

Secondly, be willing to return the favor. Saying “If you temp Villain A for me for this scene, I'll temp Villain B for you for that scene,” will get you a lot further along than “Pleeeeeeeeeeease temp this villain for me!!”

On a personal note, I find temping villains is fun. Their appearances are limited, so you can get away with giving them a lot of personality and very little depth. You can really play up and parody minor aspects and traits of their personality, and go nuts with it.

V. ITS NOT STEALING IF YOU DON'T GET CAUGHT

If you're having trouble thinking of a plot, there are usually two places you go for quick inspiration. First is to the comic books themselves. Think of your favorite stories with your character, then think of what you would have done differently had you wrote it. Our continuity is flexible, so you can make whatever changes if you want. So long as its not something along the lines of “Uncle Ben never died.” Do keep those changes within reason.

The second place to look for easy inspiration is around the comm. See what other plots are going on, then wonder where you could fit your character into things. Don't be afraid to use an element in someone else's plot as a springboard for your own plot for your own character. Obviously, you'll want to ask permission from the person running the plot to make sure there are no conflicts with what they have planned.

VI. JUST DO IT

As stated earlier, the mod team generally greenlights the BIG plots, but if you're not running some world shattering crossover, you don't need permission from the mod team to go ahead with your plot. We'd like to be kept advised during the planning stages, particularly if something major will happen, but don't wait around for our blessing, you all ready have it.

VII. YOUR VERY FIRST K.I.S.S. (KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID)

If you've never run a plot before, the process can seem intimidating and a hassle. To that end, start small. A good small plot should be like a good quick joke. “A guy walks into a bar... pulls out a gun to rob the place, but Daredevil shows up and kicks the crap out of him” or something to that effect.

Keep the number of players involved small. You'll always need at least one other person (unless you want to play with yourself in front of everyone), but try to keep the number at less than four. A lower number of players will give you less people to keep track of, and plots tend to run quicker when there are fewer people involved. Just think, in terms of scheduling alone, if you have 10 people involved in a plot, half of whom live in different timezones, what are the odds that all ten of you will be online at the same time? But if there are only three, those odds increase.

Keep your plot streamlined and straightforward. Limit the misdirection, as well as the grandiose and elaborate plans. The less details you have to go over, the more you can concentrate on simply playing through and having fun.

VIII. MY COMMON SENSE IS TINGLING

Let's be honest, most of us play characters who run around in brightly colored spandex, solve 90% of their problems by repeatedly punching it until it falls down, and often do things with little regard for collateral damage or government rules and regulations.

That's still no excuse for making your character stupid. Unless you play melody Guthrie, in which case, its totally IC. But otherwise?

Your character has a brain. So does every other character in the game. So do the players of the other characters. That means you should use yours when you're plotting.

Also, sometimes you're going to run into a wall while plotting. Either writers block, or some kind of logic problem, or logistical problem. Don't smash your head into a wall over it. I find that taking the path of least resistance usually works out well. Ask yourself "What's the least you need to do to get over this hurdle?" Remember, sometimes the simplest solution or the simplest explanation is often the best.

IX. WHY THE HELL DID I JUST DO THAT?

Whenever you think of a plot to run, ask yourself “What is the point or purpose of this plot?” The answer doesn't have to be something deep and elaborate. It can be as simple as “The point is to have Iron Fist punch someone in the face” or as complex as “I wanted to explore the darkest corners of my character's soul.”

There is no wrong answer, but its something to keep in mind as you plan and as you play. Sometimes what you want a plot to do for your character, and what the plot ends up doing for your character, can be end up as totally different things.

X. ...AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH

A good plot must have three things: A conflict. A climax. And a resolution.

Or: A beginning. A middle. And an END.

All good stories have an ending, so keep one in mind when you plot. Know what it is that you want your character to be working towards. Having an endpoint or goal in mind tends to help keep plots focused so they don't meander around aimlessly.

You don't have to narrow down your ending to anything too specific. But you should know what signals the end of the plot. Is it when the villain is defeated? Or when an item is recovered? When does your plot end?

XI. FOLLOW THROUGH

I really can't stress this point enough. In fact, I'm going to stress it some more.

FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR PLOTS.

Seriously. Do not start a plot unless YOU fully intend to finish it. No one else is going to run your plot for you. If you started a plot, you have a responsibility to the community, and to the other players who have committed time and energy towards your plot, to see it through to its end. Period. Not every plot will move at lightening speed, but its important that it keep moving until its over. Its rude to other players to leave them hanging, and can gum up the works.

Sometimes, plots drag on and do get stuck in a lurch. This can happen for hundreds of reasons, from real life cracking down on someone, to lack of direction. Remember, if it is your plot, people will follow your lead, not the other way around. If its stalled, you need to make the effort to get it moving, not wait for someone else.

XII. PLEASE, BE GENTLE

As stated above, a good plot needs a conflict, climax, and resolution. That, however, doesn't mean that the conflict must be physical. Emotional conflicts between characters can be just as moving and powerful as any fight, and can be just as much fun to play through. They're also a good way to develop and add depth to your character, and you can really get into their head.

Hopefully, you'll find some of the information above useful. It may look like a lot to remember, but there's really nothing to it.
