| History: | At 10, Martin Baum and his family were driving out of New York for holiday when a superhero fight knocks part of a nearby building out. The falling debris causes chaos on the road as people and cars frantically try and get away. As panic erupts Martin’s X-gene manifests and his body develops portals directly to magic sources in other dimensions. The sudden buildup causes the magicks to explode out of him, decimating everything in a 20m radius, including his parents. The disturbance in magical energies brings Dr. Strange to the scene, who decides that the best way for the boy to learn to adapt to his mutant power and control it is to become his student. Martin goes to live with Dr. Strange and Wong where he starts learning the basics.
While helping Strange in another magical dimension, his body experienced time faster than his mind. This has caused Martin’s body to age physically to 16 while his mind has remained at 13.
While noticing a magical disturbance in Boston, Martin goes to help out, where he meets the Thunderbolts and joins their team. | | Powers: | Martin’s body has become a portal to magic energies, with his hands being the main exits for magic to leak out. Because of this, Dr. Strange has developed and given him gloves that restrict the flow of magic out of him. But these gloves can only hold back so much, and if Martin doesn’t concentrate while handling things, the magic leaks out and can lead to unexpected results, mostly transmutations (he’s accidentally turned many of Dr. Strange’s magical books into small animals). Because of this he’s very wary about touching anything, especially people. Martin is never sure of just how much access to this magic he has, and since on the removal of his gloves it tends to build up and explode out, neither him nor Doctor Strange have tested the limits of his magical power.
As a sorcerer, Martin has far more power than control. Which is why he finds it easier to use the normal energy draining time spells than many smaller spells that may be easier. As a conduit for magical energies the time he needs to collect or build up power for a spell is much shorter than for other sorcerers but he spends most of the time reigning in and controlling how much power he collects which actually makes him slower than more experience mages. Because of this he can't always get shields up in time or freeze objects in time fast enough to avoid injury. He's a fast learner but his main weakness is lack of experience in using magic in emergency situations in this dimension (the magical realms and demons he can deal with a bit better).
Main magical abilities: Astral Projection – one of the few abilities he has good control over and can maintain it even at large distances Magic Discs- Martin uses these as a platform for teleportation and to allow him to fly while standing on them. Can also be used as protective shields. Concealment spells- renders Martin and those in direct physical contact with him invisible for a time Time Manipulation- can freeze objects in time for a few minutes at most, animals and people for shorter amounts of time. The largest objects he can freeze in time are about the size of 2 large bookcases, and he can only stop or slow down a maximum of two people at a time. He usually puts up a seal on the object or person he wishes to effect If he loses control or the gloves give out, Martin can freeze entire city blocks in time for hours. This has only happened once and the potential side effects mean he is very careful about not losing control again. Teleportation- uses the discs as a platform for this, and passes through the Dark Dimension as an intermediate whenever teleporting. This is the ability he has the most practice at. He can also conjure discs under other objects and people and teleport them. Transmutation- cannot control this very well, so avoids using it. If not focusing when touching things he accidentally uses this. Telepathy- he’s working on this, but since he’s only interacted with Dr.Strange and other mystics that are adept at it, he hasn’t had much practice. Telekinesis – not very precise at times, can work with things desk sized and smaller.
In addition to these he has knowledge and can do many smaller charms and spells, most of which tend to be in the categories of decorating, fireworks, protection spells, demonic banishing, and opening portals to other realms. The protection, banishment and portal spells he is less familiar with and usually looks them up in his spellbook before attempting any, they are also liable to screw up more easily. | | Abilities: | Martin is a fast learner but likes to double check for safety and just to be sure.
Is decent with latin but is a better reader. Also knows smatterings of other languages often found in spells but isn't fluent in any. | | Paraphernalia: | Because he can't control the magic flowing out constantly through his hands, Doctor Strange gave him enchanted gloves that hold back a good deal of it. On top of the magic the gloves already have on, extra seals were placed on top to limit the flow even more. Martin never takes off his gloves, and he doesn't know how to either. He's only been shown how to remove one of the top seals in cases of emergency when he needs more power. He knows the spell to replace the seal but it's difficult to do it with that much magic leaking out so Doctor Strange must normally replace it for him. As he learns to control more of his power he may be allowed to remove a few of the seals, but it is highly unlikely he'll ever be able to remove the gloves.
Martin owns a magic hat that he considers his lucky hat which he recieved as a gift from Doctor Strange. It's been enchanted and charmed so much that it is resistant to most forms of damage, has an alert system if anyone other than him touches it, and is very resistant to any magical influence. It's the only thing Martin can touch without worrying about any stray magic from his hands affecting. As a result it's his most prized and important possession. The hat is also a storage device and can hold hidden within it five times its volume.
He also carries around, in his hat, a comprehensive spellbook. It's neither rare nor particularly valuable but it covers a large array of spells and Martin can usually be found studying it. | | Personality | Spending the past few years as Dr. Strange's apprentice has sent Martin to various realms and had him encounter some very strange sights. As a result, his sense of what is dangerous and out of the ordinary is skewed and what should scare him normally doesn't.
He's excitable and eager, both to please and to learn, but is surprisingly patient and although he can rush into things, he likes having time to prepare before heading off into an unknown situation, but can improvise rather well.
Because of his odd aging he gets confused as to how old he is, or should act, very often. He's almost given up on acting exactly his mental or physical age and just ignores it. He is careful about other people's safety but his mental age shows when it becomes apparent just how inexperienced he is, not to mention how excited he can be.
Despite being easily excited for adventure, he's quite studious and is often found studying his spellbook or reading in his spare time.
He loves testing new spells and fighting demons, and if he can do both, then it's even better. | | Trivia: | He is extremely wary of physical contact with other people. To the point at which he won't touch anyone and flinches or jumps away if anyone touches him. This is mostly for safety as he's never very confident that some stray magic from his hands won't harm someone.
Martin loves most holidays, mostly for decorating, with the exception of Halloween, Mother's Day and Father's Day.
He has a fascination with fireworks and explosions, although he is very careful whenever he does any.
He avoids touching most things in general, and usually opts to use telekinesis instead. But it's not always the most steady method and accidents do happen.
Martin is shy about the way he eats. Given his telekinesis work isn't the most precise, there's always the chance it could get messy and he doesn't like other people seeing that.
Despite being a mutant, he doesn't identify with mutants and has had very little contact with other mutants, so he tends to identify himself as a sorcerer. After all, mutants aren't so loved. | |
