| History: | Sydney Lauren Ashcroft was born to Jake and Charlotte Ashcroft four years after her sister Bryn. Sydney had a normal childhood, growing up with her sister and parents. The family traveled frequently and the two girls learned much of the world and different cultures.
With her mutant gifts, she excelled at school and learned at an accelerated pace. She loved reading and the challenge of learning new languages.
Her father was a history professor at UC Berkeley and Sydney frequently went to work with her father, spending many hours sitting in his office or in his classes. This time with her father helped her develop a love of history and inspired her to study to become a history professor. However, her parents were killed in a car accident while she was a sophomore in college. The tragic event caused her to withdraw from school and led to a period of reckless behavior.
It was during this time that she became pregnant and gave birth to a girl, Zoey. With no money of her own and being a single parent, Sydney was unable to return to school. She took part time jobs waitressing and as working as a research assistant to an old colleague of her father’s while trying to raise her daughter Zoey. Her sister Bryn helped in the form of being a babysitter while Sydney was working.
With her gift of languages and ability to learn new ones fairly quickly and easily, Sydney eventually started working freelance in translation services. She has worked for a wide variety of clients from book publishers to a few freelance jobs for Stark Inc.
Tony Stark offered her a job in Los Angeles as an advisor to a new superhero team. Sydney and her daughter Zoey moved into the Avengers Compound. Syd started being the cultural liaison to the Defenders. Sydney and Zoey settled in and began to adjust to their new life.
Many times Syd felt way in over her head trying to manage the chaos and thoughts of quittiing did enter her mind. Between demon and undead attacks and chaos at Disneyland, the Defenders have been keeping her busy.
She returned to school in the fall of 2009 and resumed her pursuit of earning her degree in history. Thor approached Simon and Syd to act as representatives for Scion Holdings. The two along with the rest of the Defenders traveled to New York around New Year's to deal with Scion's takeover of Stark Inc. The new position with Scion came with an increase in salary and Syd was now secure about being able to provide for Zoey.
Simon took Syd and Zoey ice skating in New York and Syd proved to be not so good a skater. Syd felt increasing attraction to Simon and admitted to liking him, but he admitted to seeing her as team mom. After this confession, Syd believed that Simon had no interest in her.
Sydney met Michael Sapt when her sister Bryn set her up on a blind date. The two hit if off and made future plans to see each other again.
During a day out with lunch, Syd was approached by Avery Crittenden, someone from her past and Zoey's dad. The two talked for awhile and made plans to meet for dinner later in the week. Syd was very nervous about Avery's appearance and was worried that he will try to take Zoey from her.
Avery and Syd sat down and had dinner. Syd confirmed that Zoey was Avery's daughter. There was some tension when they discussed why Syd didn't tell him about Zoey sooner and the two continued to talk for some time. They started sorting things out in regards to Zoey.
Syd and Michael Sapt had a few dates and Michael eventually visited the compound to meet the rest of the Defenders.
Sydney and Avery made plans to meet at Chuck E Cheese so Avery could meet Zoey. Sydney presented Avery with a custody arrangement for him to look over. Eventually Avery agreed to the custody arrange
Due to her thing with Simon, Sydney informed Michael of the budding relationship and they agreed to be friends.
Sydney got an offer to go on an archeological dig in Rome for the summer. She was unsure of what she was going do to and gave herself some time to make a decision.
Sydney and Zoey helped Avery celebrate his birthday with cake and a present. Avery played the guitar they got for him and the three spent some quality time together. Avery and Sydney were getting along well and it looked like the two had resolved all differences.
Syd and Avery had dinner to catch up and talk about Zoey and discuss Syd's offer to go to Rome for the summer. Syd decided to go on the dig and even have Avery and Zoey visit her for a short while.
Sydney and the Defenders take Marlow shopping for new clothes. They ran into the Revenge Squad and ended up fighting them in the mall.
After hearing the news about Fargo, Georgia, Avery called Sydney. Syd went over to his place and listened to him talk about what was bothering him. Avery asked Sydney out on a date and she agreed. A few nights later they went out and Avery ended up staying the night with Sydney at the compound. The two went out again and talked about the one night they shared together. The two decided to see where things took them and to give a relationship a try.
The next big event would come when the military showed up on the Defender's front lawn demanding the alien back. The Defenders didn't know what the general was talking about until Zoey confessed that George was real and had been staying with them. George came out and went with the military, but would be allowed to visit Zoey on occasion.
Sydney, Zoey and Avery would attend the Maria Stark Annual Winter Charity Ball and Syd would get to meet Kristoff.
The holidays would pass without any incidents and Syd enjoyed the company of family and friends.
As part of her job with the Defenders, Syd keeps up on local and national events. When she started seeing religious cults for other gods and goddesses popping up, Syd called the Defenders together and sent them out to investigate. The Defenders traced the source of the problem to Las Vegas and the Seven Heavens hotel and they went to deal with it while Syd and Zoey stayed home.
Avery would participate in the Maria Stark Foundation Charity Auction and Syd would find herself in a bidding war with a woman. Little did she know it was Avery's ex-wife. Syd would meet Cecelia one day when she was in New York for a Stark Inc board meeting. Syd and Cecelia would talk and Cecelia would inform Syd that she didn't sign the divorce papers and that she and Avery were still married. The conversation would end with Cecelia throwing a glass of water in Syd's face.
